Borough manager resigns
WRANGELL
- Borough Manager Lisa Van Bargen has resigned. Van Bargen's last day

Woman dies in fire, explosions
WHITEHORSE
- The RCMP investigating multiple explosions and a fire which killed a
woman near Dawson City last week. Cam Sigurdson, 62, died at her Old

District still first in testing
SKAGWAY
- For the fifth year in a row the Skagway School District has placed
first statewide in math and English language arts tests. For four years
it has also led in science, but this year's sciences results have been

COVID patient evacuated in middle of the night
HAINES
- A Coast helicopter had to evacuate a 70-year-old Haines resident to
Juneau at three am last week. Officials said man was suffering from
COVID 19. It was the first reported COVID evacuation for a local

Store reopens
PETERSBURG
- The Hammer and WIkan Convenience Store has reopened after a
three-month closure after it was given a makeover. The store was the
first store opened by John Hammer and Andrew Wikan, a century ago. THE

Juneau superintendent tops in state
JUNEAU
- School Superintendent Bridgit Weiss is having a heck of a year. This
summer, she was lauded by Time magazine as one of 29 educators
nationally dealing with the COVID epidemic. Now, she has a new statewide
award. She has been named Alaska's School Superintendent of the Year.

Mask requirement remains in place
SITKA
- The local COVID mask requirement will remain in place for the next
six months if the COVID level remains "high" in the community, the
borough assembly decided on a 4-2 vote last week. The mandate requires

Businesses not at pessimistic
WRANGELL
- Local businesses are not as pessimistic about the economy as those in
other communities, according to a recent survey. just about half of the
Wrangell businesses surveyed by Rain Coast Data were pessimistic about
the future. That number was lower than in Ketchikan, Hoonah, Skagway and

Safe consumption site opens
WHITEHORSE
- The Yukon government has opened the territory's first safe
consumption site. The location - which officials hope will help stem a
rapidly rising overdose rate - is in a government building on Cook

Banner cruise season projected
HAINES
- Projections are for Haines to receive 88,000 cruise passengers next
summer. If they hold true, it will be the largest number of cruise
passengers in the past 20 years. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Student raises $8,000+
SKAGWAY
- Local school student, Mina Yee, 11, has raised more than $8,000 to
benefit the local Fran Delisle Cancer Fund. Yee raised the money by
hiking to Upper Dewey Lake every Wednesday in July and August. She had
more than 100 sponsors for her fundraiser. THE SKAGWAY NEWS
Native land returned
KITIMAT
- The federal government has added more than 600 acres of land in the
Minette Bay are to the Haisla trive reserve. Officials said that the
land should have been conveyed back in the 1950s, but was taken by the
federal government illegally. The federal government eventually paid the
tribe for the land in the 1990s and the tribe has now spent the last 25

Recording setting pilot visits
JUNEAU
- Nineteen-year-old Zara Rutherford passed through Juneau last week on
an unusual quest. Rutherford is hoping to become the youngest woman to
fly solo around the world. Rutherford hopes to conclude her journey in
