Voters okay taxes for streets
JUNEAU - Voters have
elected to continue a three-percent sales tax for street maintenance and
city and borough operations. Michelle Hale and Barbara Blake appear to
have won seats on the Borough Assembly, THE JUNEAU

Boro may lift heli-ski limit
HAINES - Heli-skiing may
become a bigger thing in the borough. The assembly recently took its
first steps to remove it's 10-year-old limit on the number of operations
in the borough. Currently only three heli-ski

Businesses not as pessimistic
WRANGELL - Local businesses are not as
pessimistic about the economy as those in other communities, according
to a recent survey. Just about half of the Wrangell businesses surveyed
by Rain Coast Data were pessimistic about the future.
That number was lower than in Ketchikan, Hoonah, Skagway and Haines. THE

Safe consumption site opens
WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government has opened the
territory's first safe consumption site. The location - which officials
hope will help stem a rapidly rising overdose rate - is in a government

Housing skyrockets
TERRACE - Terrace has the highest housing prices
in northern BC at $463,140, outpacing Prince Rupert at $418,985. Average
Terrace prices have increased by $70,000 in the past year. THE TERRACE

Big cruise summer forecasted

HAINES - Projections are for Haines to receive
88,000 cruise passengers next summer. If they hold true, it will be the
largest number of cruise passengers in the past 20 years. THE CHILKAT

Student raises $8,000+
SKAGWAY - Local school student, Mina Yee, 11, has
raised more than $8,000 to benefit the local Fran Delisle Cancer Fund.
Yee raised the money by hiking to Upper Dewey Lake every Wednesday in
July and August. She had more than 100 sponsors
for her fundraiser. THE SKAGWAY NEWS
Native land returned
KITIMAT - The federal government has added more
than 600 acres of land in the Minette Bay are to the Haisla tribe
reserve. Officials said that the land should have been conveyed back in
the 1950s but was taken by the federal government
illegally. The federal government eventually paid the tribe for the land
in the 1990s and the tribe has now spent the last 25 years trying to

Bear calls drop
HAINES - Fish and Game says the number of bear
calls in the area has dropped significantly from 2020. Only about 150
had come in by the end of September, compared to more than 350 at the
same time last year. The number of bears killed
has also dropped, two this year compared to 14 last year. The officials
say that a better berry crop and salmon run this year may be a factor.

Recording setting pilot visits
JUNEAU - Nineteen-year-old Zara Rutherford passed
through Juneau recently on an unusual quest. Rutherford is hoping to
become the youngest woman to fly solo around the world. Rutherford hopes
to conclude her journey in November. THE JUNEAU

Nechako Center future pondered
KITIMAT - The area government is pondering what
to do with the Nechako Center, a longtime commercial center. Proposals
are ranging from additional housing to open space and other public

TERRACE - Students at the Veritas Catholic School
are thrilled by the new playground equipment. Rotary Club of Terrace
worked with the school parents to raise $25,000 for a new zip line. THE
