School future in doubt 

 

KLUKWAN - The future of the local school is in doubt as the Chatham School District has been discussing its fate. The District expected that the Klukwan school would have 12 students this year, more than the state minimum of 10, but thus far total enrollment in Klukwan has been five. Grant sought for dock electrical 

 

JUNEAU - City leaders are awaiting word from the federal government whether Juneau will get a grant to provide electrical service to cruise ships at the Downtown docks. The city is seeking $20 million of the expected $25 million cost. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 

 

More bathrooms? Always

Regalia ‘mocking’ probed 

 

KITIMAT - School officials are investigating a report that a middle school teacher mocked a student who wore regalia to picture day. The incident happened at Mt. Elizabeth Middle School. The student was then allegedly kicked out of the class and the rest of the students left the room in solidarity. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL 

 

Grant sought for medical center 

 

PETERSBURG - The Petersburg Medical Center is hoping to get up to $14 million in federal funding for a new facility. Some residents are suggesting that the regional health consortium, SEARHC, should build and operate a new medical facility in town. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

JUNEAU - Cheryl Fellman likes a challenge and has already run a marathon, hiked the Appalachian Trail and climbed numerous mountains. Last week, hopes to do something fewer than 500 people in the world have done, swim an ice mile. The water must be under 41 degrees for the swim to qualify. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 

 

Grocery tax exemption discussed 

 

HAINES - The borough commerce committee is pondering whether to recommend to a temporary grocery exemption from sales tax. Committee members say a three-month exemption would benefit all residents, but especially low income ones. It is estimated that 15 percent of the borough sales tax receipts come from groceries. Major repair for bridge 

 

PETERSBURG - The Rasmus Enge Memorial Bridge is looking at a major redo next summer. Officials say the wooden bridge on Sing Lee Alley, which was built in 1945, has received repairs several times the past decade. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

KLAWOCK - After working in health care in Alaska for nearly 40 years, Dan Weaver is retiring to Washington State. Most recently, he has been the sole physical therapist on Prince of Wales Island since 2007. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST 

 

Hiker body found 

 

JUNEAU - The body of a hiker who went missing last week was found by searchers in an area where he frequently hiked. Douglas Shockley, 64, was found near Dredge Lake. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 

 

Derelic barge to be removed 

 

PORT EDWARD - For more than a decade, the derelict fish-processing barge "Scotch Cap" has been rusting away in Port Edward harbor. Now the Prince Rupert Port Authority is seeking bids to "deconstruct" it. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW
