Virus cases spike
'
PETERSBURG - Local government offices were closed last week after a spike in COVID 19 cases. More than 30 cases of the virus were recorded in a week, pushing the active case count to more than 50. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

SITKA - A caller reported a dog in the water near the UAS campus, Officers determined it was a stick of wood, not a dog. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL 
Suspicious fire probed
KITIMAT – The RCMP is investigating what it considers a “suspicious” house fire in Kitimaat Village last week. Officials say the fire started outside the building. All the occupants were able to safely evacuate. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL 
Panel recommends intervention teams 
TERRACE – A coroner’s jury that investigated the death of a mother and her son in 2016 is recommending “intervention” teams be established to de-escalate dangerous situations in the future. The two died when they opened fire on RCMP officers approaching their home. THE TERRACE STANDARD 
Power rates may rise
PETERSBURG - Utility users could see an increase in electrical rates over the next two years. Petersburg Municipal Power and Light says the residential users could see a 2 percent increase and commercial rates may go up 3 percent. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Drag racer speeds to big time
PRINCE RUPERT – Kham Shantz is a bit of a lead foot. But that’s a good thing as the local drag racer is going to Las Vegas later this month to run his 1,800 horsepower 1937 Chevrolet Coupe in an international drag race for the first time. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW  
COVID spreads in mink farms 
SMITHERS – Two mink farms in the area will have to shut down by 2025, after the provincial government said the industry will be banned at that point. Officials say that COVID 19 has been found in nine provincial mink farms and has transferred from the mink to employees. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS 
A visit from Saint Narcolas? 
SITKA – A woman said she had come home and found a baggie with a white substance in it. Officers tested it and determined it was cocaine. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL 
Former hospital administrator dies
PETERSBURG - Residents are remembering former longtime local medical center administrator Florence LeRoy. Leroy died earlier this year at 101. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Housing project nears completion
PRINCE RUPERT – Officials hope that a 15-unit town home project on Immanuel Street will help ease the local housing crunch. The project replaces an older development on the site. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW 
Tax increase likely 
TERRACE – The city government is proposing a 5.5 percent tax increase for 2022. Officials say they expect the $15 million city budget to increase by nearly $1 million next year, primarily because of  
increased emergency services costs. THE TERRACE STANDARD 
Bee sweet! 
KITIMAT – Students at Kitimat City High School have a sweet fundraiser going. Last year, the Outdoor Education program began keeping a pair of beehives. This year they have fresh honey to sell. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

PETERSBURG - Local student Joseph Tagaban is hoping to be home for Thanksgiving. He has been in Seattle Children's Hospital since January fighting cancer, but his doctors now say it is in remission. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
