New clinic head has been around
SKAGWAY - The new medical director of the Dahl Memorial Clinic certainly
has a colorful background. Brent Kunzler started off as a medic in the
US Army Special Forces in Vietnam in 1969 and also served eight years in
Iraq before retiring from the military in
1994. Over the years, he has worked in Antarctica, the Virgin Islands

Summer street closure announced
SITKA - The Planning Commission has voted to close down Lincoln Street
to vehicle traffic next summer when a significant number of cruise
passengers are in town. The closure takes effect when there are at least
3,000 visitors and is between the hours of 10

Vaccination proof required
KITIMAT -Proof of vaccination will need to be shown to attend activities
at the Tamitik Jubilee Sports Complex and Riverlodge Recreation Centre.
All residents over the age of 12 will have to show they have had two

PRINCE RUPERT - Resident Jan Loroff is the winner of the national
Sportsnet Hockey Predictor contest for 2021. His prize, a new 2021 Dodge

Investigation to be investigated
WHITEHORSE - The Yukon Ombudsman will investigate the reporting of a
case of sexual abuse of a student at Hidden Valley Elementary School.
The issue, according to Ombudsman Diane McLeod-MacKay, is why it took
the school nearly two years to inform parents that
charges had been filed against an educational assistant at the school.

Plane crashes, no one hurt
SKAGWAY - What is usually a short plane ride from Juneau to Skagway was
even shorter last week. An Alaska Seaplanes Grand Caravan with six
people on board failed to get enough altitude and crashed at the end of
the runway. Officials say there were no serious

SITKA - A caller asked police to do a welfare check on a friend of his,
but he didn't know the friend's last name or where he was supposed to

Number your houses!
PRINCE RUPERT - Emergency officials say that community safety is being
compromised because there is no rule requiring a specific size for house
numbers. As a result, response is delayed because some houses don't
have visible numbers. The officials would like
the city to require a certain size and visibility for the numbers. THE

Not a good move
JUNEAU - Police say a 26-year-old man has been medivaced to Seattle with
serious injuries after he allegedly exited a moving a vehicle after
arguing with the 22-year-old female driver. The driver has been charged
with driving while intoxicated. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Emergency response an issue
SANDSPIT - Emergency officials are looking to make improvements in
response after the community was left without coverage for three days in
October. Sandspit is on a different island from Queen Charlotte, Masset
and Port Clements and therefore cannot get coverage
from those communities when its own crews are unavailable. THE HAIDA

Hunter shoots charging bear
SITKA - A hunter on Bear Mountain south of town shot and killed a brown
bear after it charged him when he was deer hunting last week. Trenton
Hammock used his cell phone to film the beer as it began stalking around
him after he had killed a deer. Officials
say the video shows that Hammock was likely justified in shooting the

Japanese teacher investigates Terrace letter to Soviet students
TERRACE - It's a mystery involving a Terrace letter, a Russian textbook
and a Japanese professor. The Tokyo professor Torahiko Terada recently
came across a picture of a pen pal letter from Terrace written to a
Soviet school. The letter was in a 1978 English
language textbook in the Soviet Union. Now Terada is hoping to contact
the nine local students who sent the letter, probably in 1976. THE

Councillor is new mayor
WHITEHORSE - City councillor Laura Cabott has been elected mayor. Cabott
prevailed with 43 percent of the vote in a three-way race against Patti

SITKA - A woman called police to report that someone had been inside her
house. Police determined that the footprints on her newly mopped floors
