Family reunited at border
HAINES - The reopening of the Canadian border has reunited one local family. Trygve Bakke Sr. lives in Haines Junction. Trygve Bakke Jr. is a is a senior at Haines High. The last time they had seen each other was nearly two years ago. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Mask rule does not apply to homes
PETERSBURG - A new mask mandate ordinance was amended last week. The ordinance does not apply to private residences. The assembly also removed any proposed fines for non-compliance. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Peterson: Clerk of the year
SITKA - Sara Peterson has been named the Municipal Clerk of the year by the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks. Peterson has been the Sitka clerk since 2015. She has worked for the borough since 2003. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
Derelict boats removed
WRANGELL - The ports and harbors department is tidying up the boatyard. Four derelict boats, Island Belle, Bonnie Jean, Tres Suertes and Parakeet have already been tagged for disposal and six others may soon join them. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
Grant funds vaccine nurse
JUNEAU - The community is offering walking vaccines and boosters for children and adults at the public health center. Officials say the service - until the end of the year - is supported by a federal grant that pays for a nurse to be on site to provide the shots. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Dyea land for sale
SKAGWAY - The borough is putting up two parcels of waterfront land in Dyea for sale by lottery. The two multi-acre parcels can only be purchased by Skagway residents over the age of 18. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Grant funding for dock
HAINES - The borough has received a $20 million federal grant to to rehabilitate the Lutak Dock. The grant will cover approximately half the cost of the project. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Petersburg in massive new district
PETERSBURG - If the most recent plan by the Alaska Redistricting Board holds Petersburg will remain in a state house district with Sitka but both will be part of geographically massive district that also includes nearly all of Prince of Wales Island and Yakutat. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
New tourism director names
SKAGWAY - Jaime Brinker has been hired as the borough's tourism director. The longtime resident was previously the public relations director for the White Pass and Yukon Railway. THE SKAGWAY NEWS
Band celebrates border opening
HAINES - When the Canadian border north of Haines opened up earlier this month, there was fanfare. Literally. Members of the Haines Marching Band were on hand to play "O Canada" to visitors arriving at the border from Canada. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Borough loses $20M in sales taxes
JUNEAU - Many small local businesses are hanging on, hoping for a more normal tourism season in 2022. City officials say that sales tax revenues were down more than $20 million dollars in 2020 and 2021. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Kake road open
PETERSBURG - The Kake Access road is officially open to the public. The project improved nearly 25 miles of existing roads and added six new miles. The state paid for the $40 million project. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
That's a big house!
SITKA - A house was reported to be "collapsing" onto Katlian Street. It was also found to be collapsing onto Kaagwaantaan Street. Police cleared the area around the house. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
