Bars, nightclubs closed  

 

PRINCE RUPERT - The province has closed all bars and nightclubs in the north and northwest health areas through the end of January. The COVID 19 restrictions will also limit the size of all indoor gatherings including those in private homes. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW 

 

Pay to park 

 

PETERSBURG - It now costs money to park at the James A. Johnson Airport. The first hour is free, but it is a dollar an hour afterwards. To park for six days or less it will cost $7 per day and anything over six days will cost $5 a day. THE PETERSBURG PILOT 

 

New dock agreement reached 

 

SKAGWAY - The borough and the state have signed an agreement for a new multi-use ferry dock. The proposed dock will also be able handle some of the summer visitor industry traffic. The old dock was built in 1978, sank in 2014 and was refloated but needs replacement. THE SKAGWAY NEWS 

 

Lodge expands 

 

SMITHERS - The Hudson Bay Lodge has received permission from the city to build a $3.5 million expansion. The hotel will add a pool, waterslide, hot tub, spa and a fitness center. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS 

 

Two groups get bequests 

 

JUNEAU -Diane Hunsbedt's great joy was walking her dogs on the local trails in Juneau. So, when she passed away recently, she left large bequests to Juneau Animal Rescue and Trail Mix Inc. She asked that the amounts not be disclosed but both groups said the bequests were "significant." THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 

 

 

Fisherman banned for 18 months 

 

TERRACE - A local commercial salmon fisherman has been fined $88,000 and banned from fishing for 18 months. Gary Stoner pled guilty to overfishing his king salmon quota, retaining prohibited fish and failing to follow other fishing rules. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

 

Eyes on the road! 

 

PRINCE RUPERT - The RCMP says it has issued nearly 300 traffic citations this year in Prince Rupert. The vast majority were for distracted driving. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW 

 

Post office hours shrink further 

 

PETERSBURG - Staffing issues have forced further cuts on the local post office service window hours. The window is now only open from 3 pm to 5 pm Monday through Friday and from 2 pm to 4 pm on Saturday,. THE PETERSBURG PILOT 

 

 

Fire damages trailer 

 

SKAGWAY - A fire significantly damaged a trailer that was being winterized two weeks ago. Officials say there were no injuries. THE SKAGWAY NEWS 

 

City logger turns profit 

 

TERRACE - Demand for timber has been good for the city-owned logging company, Terrace Community Forest. Company officials say 2021 will show a $1 million profit, which will go into the city coffers. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

Teacher honored 

 

SMITHERS - A kindergarten teacher at the Bulkley Valley Christian School has been given a Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence. Christa LaFountain was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Success through Literacy and Integration. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS 

 

Musical chairs? 

 

JUNEAU - Christopher Koch, the music director of the Ozarks Lyric Opera in Springfield, Missouri, is the new music director of the Juneau Symphony. Koch said that he had been encouraged to seek the job by the former director of the Juneau Symphony, Kirby Pickett. Pickett is now the director of the Springfield Symphony. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 

 

Music fest to return 

 

TERRACE - The Pacific Northwest Music Festival will return in April after being cancelled for the past two years. The two-week event will be limited to solo acts and will have fewer educational classes than previously. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

 

Tagaban returns 

 

PETERSBURG - A large crowd was on hand at the airport last week to greet Joseph Tagaban when the high school student returned after spending nearly a year down south for cancer treatment. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
