CRAIG - A birth on Prince of Wales is a rare occurrence, most island families have their children in Ketchikan or elsewhere. But when Jill May's baby Solona decided it was "time" there was no time to transport. Cannery to stay closed 
 
HAINES – Officials at the Ocean Beauty Seafoods Excursion Inlet cannery say the facility will remain closed next summer. That means the borough will see a continued drop in the raw fish tax it receives. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

JUNEAU - More than 70 percent of those surveyed say that it is time for Juneau to have a new city/borough hall, The existing facility has been in use for 70 years and cost the government $750,000 a year in rent. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 
 
Longtime store closes 
 
KLAWOCK - Alaska Gifts is closing this month after 25 years of operation. The owners, Donna and Wayne Baxter, say they have no intention of leaving Prince of Wales. THE PRINCE OF WALES POST 
 
Shellfish sales stopped 
PRINCE RUPERT – Fisheries officials are warning residents to not consume shellfish being sold on-line as from the north coast. The entire area is currently under a paralytic shellfish warning and no legal sales are being allowed. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW 
 
Mayor picked by coin flip 
 
HYDABURG - A coin flip has determined the new mayor of the community. Both Tony Stevens and Raymond Guthrie had been tied with 25 votes each. Stevens won the coin flip. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST 
 
Superintendent dies 
 
HAINES – The Chatham School District Superintendent has died.  Police say foul play is not suspected in the sudden death of Bruce Houck, 61, THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS 
 
First female mayor 
 
WHALE PASS - Dawn Waldal-Anderson is the new mayor of Whale Pass. The city council chooses the mayor from among its members each year. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST 
 
Wind shreds floats 
 
JUNEAU - High winds recently damaged two floats at Don Statter Harbor. Harbormaster Matt Creswell says that repairs should be complete before summer. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 
 
Jingle Bell Jaunt 
 
COFFMAN COVE - Locals turned out last weekend for the Jingle Bell Jaunt. The 5K run/walk started at the Ballfield Pavilion and wound through several Coffman Cove neighborhoods. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST 
 
Avalanche closes highway 
 
TERRACE – Traffic along Highway 16 was slowed to a crawl and then completely stopped for several hours by heavy snowfall last weekend. First, a small avalanche shut down one lane of the highway near Onion Lake between Terrace and Prince Rupert, then the threat of a much larger one near Shames Mountain caused the complete closure of the highway.
