Immigrant need rises
PRINCE RUPERT - The number of immigrants seeking assistance from local settlement officials has increased dramatically since the beginning of the year. In January there were five people seeking assistance with English language development, citizenship and other areas. As of mid-December the number was 30. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW
Little Norway, or Big Norway?
PETERSBURG - In a normal year, Petersburg get just about 9 inches of snow by mid-December each year. This isn't a normal year. Petersburg has 63 inches of snow thus far. Only two years, 2006 and 1946 have ever topped that. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Moseley wins Clark Award
SKAGWAY - Eric Moseley has won the 35th Annual Helen B. Clark Award for Skagway Community Service for his work helping residents deal with the euthanization of their pets. His wife Katherine Selmer Moseley won the award 12 years ago for her work establishing the Paws & Claws Animal Shelter. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Dam study money approved
WRANGELL - The borough assembly has approved $100,000 to study the city water reservoirs with an eye toward major improvements. State engineers say the dams are fine in stable conditions but could have problems in the event of a seismic event. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
Playground funds top $100K
HAINES - More than $125,000 has been raised thus far for a new playground at the Haines School. The playground is being built in memory of kindergarten teacher Jenae Larson who was killed in the Beach Road landslide last year. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Nearly 80 percent vaccinated
TERRACE - Northern region health officials say that vaccinations appear to have plateaued as fewer and fewer residents are getting vaccinated each week. Currently 78 percent of those aged 12 and up in the northern area have gotten both shots. The Province-wide percentage is 88 percent. THE TERRACE STANDARD
AFN honors Juneau police chief
JUNEAU - The Alaska Federation of Natives has honored Juneau police chief Ed Mercer with its annual president's award. The award honors an Alaska Native for outstanding contributions to their community. Mercer has been the chief since 2017. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
New museum planned
KITIMAT - The Kitimat Museum and Archives is planning a new facility. The current 52-year-old building will be replaced by a new one that will be built in conjunction with the Haisla Nation which is looking for a facility to host its cultural holdings. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
Hospital tab rises
TERRACE - Just a few days after announcing that the $622 million Mills Memorial Hospital is on track, budget-wise, regional health officials now say the total cost will top $635 million because an advanced birth program is an addition to the original plans. THE TERRACE STANDARD
They knew her when
SITKA - Emma Broyles, the newly crowned Miss America, is very familiar to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. The Anchorage resident had lead roles in SFA productions of "Guys and Dolls" and "Legally Blonde" in the summers of 2016 and 2018. THE DAILY SENTINEL
Hoopsters go to college
HAINES - Haines High graduates Kirby Faverty and Carson Crager spent several years together on the Haines basketball team. Now they have decided to continue playing together, at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
