Petersburg Pilot sold after four decades 

 

PETERSBURG - After 45 years, Ron and Anne Loesch are retiring as owners and publishers of the Petersburg Pilot. On January 1, the newspaper was sold to its general manager, Orin Pierson. THE PETERSBURG PILOT 

 

‘Sobering center’ reopens 

 

JUNEAU - Officials say the community "sobering" center is working well this winter. The facility has moved back into the Dan Austin Center near the airport after operating in Centennial Hall for the past year. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 

 

National champ bodybuilder 

 

WHITEHORSE - Local woman Chelsea Mooney is the top amateur female body builder in Canada. Mooney recently won the CPA National Pro Qualifier in Toronto and says she is looking forward to competing as a professional body builder in the future. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR

JUNEAU - Police are investigating a report that a 54-year-old man stole a snowblower from the carport of a 79-year-old woman on Fritz Cove Road last week. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

TERRACE - Northern Health has opened a new COVID 19 vaccine clinic at the Skeena Mall. The clinic is open from 10 am to 6 pm, Monday through Thursday. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

First Baby #1 

 

PRINCE RUPERT - Aahan Mishra was supposed to be born on Dec. 29, but he decided to wait a couple of days and become the first baby of the new year. His parents, Anand and Deepika Mishra welcomed him at 10:04 am on New Year's Day. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW 

 

Kettle drive raises nearly $14K 

 

PETERSBURG - The Salvation Army Red Kettle drive raised just under $14,000 this holiday season. The goal had been $14,000 and the total was $13,911.30. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

JUNEAU - It didn't take long for the first baby of the year to be born in Juneau. Greyson Tafia Nauer was born to Giovanni and Faalo Nauer on Jan. 2. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 

 

Slow down! 

 

TERRACE – Compact ice is creating the worst conditions seen on Hwy 37 in the past 20 years, officials say. They are hoping that warming conditions in the region will help, but in general the only current solution is for residents to take care on the road between Kitimat and Terrace, THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

 

Utility hikes pondered 

 

WRANGELL - Borough officials are looking at utility rate increases this year. The Assembly will consider increases of between 7.5 and 9 percent. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL 

 

Ferry honors 20-year employees 

 

HOLLIS - With the Inter-Island Ferry celebrating its 20th anniversary recently, the organization also took time to honor four long time employees. Deckhand Barbi Armstrong (20 years) Captain Scott Crane (20 years), Operations manager Rich Rogers (20 years), and Captain Brian Edwards (20 years) were honored. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST 

 

Centennial planning continues 

 

CRAIG - Plans are continuing for the celebration of Craig's centennial in early March. At least two nights of local history storytelling have been scheduled for late February and early March. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST

JUNEAU - The Capital City is used to some winter cold snaps, but not like this one. Temperatures last week dipped well below zero with at least one weather station in the Valley bottoming out at -15 F. The official low, that same day, at the airport was -8. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 

 

COVID hits fire department 

 

PRINCE RUPERT - As if fighting several fires in sub-zero temperatures weren't challenging enough, the Prince Rupert fire department is fighting a COVID 19 outbreak. As of last week, eight of the 20 firefighters were quarantining after testing positive. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW
