Mayor to step down
PRINCE
RUPERT - Mayor Lee Brain announced last week that he will not seek
reelection this year. Brain was the youngest mayor in town history when
he was elected

Teen program closed
WRANGELL
-The Alaska Crossings program that takes at-risk teens on guided
wilderness expeditions will be closed in Wrangell and merged with a
similar program in
Sitka. The program - managed by SEARHC - had been based in Wrangell

Hunter fined for illegal sheep kill
WHITEHORSE - An Alaskan hunter is looking at a $12,000 fine for
illegally shooting a dall sheep just over the border in Canada. The
hunter claimed it had been shot on the Alaskan side of the border and
later posted a picture on Facebook. Canadian officials
examined the photo and found digital data that indicated the photo had

Company: Landfill will smell better
JUNEAU - Waste Management is making changes at the Lemon Creek landfill
that it hopes will reduce odors in the area. Plans are also being made
to extend the life of the facility because officials say it is unlikely
the community can find a location for a new

OD deaths increase
SMITHERS - Emergency services said it responded to fewer overdose
emergencies in 2021 than it did in 2020. But the percentage of overdose

Housing prices going up
TERRACE - Housing prices in Terrace are now the highest in northwest
British Columbia. Officials say that the prices have increased nearly 20
percent in just the last year, with the average now $440,000. THE

The yearly plunge
WRANGELL - A 20-year-tradition continued earlier this month when more
than 50 people took part in the Shoemaker Harbor Polar Plunge. The goal
was to go into the harbor and remain in the frigid water for at least

BBall tourney postponed
PRINCE RUPERT - The All-Native basketball tournament has postponed, for
at least a month. It was originally set to begin on February 12, but now

Masking ordinance expires
PETERSBURG - The emergency ordinance requiring maskis inside public
indoor spaces ended last weel after the Petersburg Borough Assembly did
not make a motion to extend it. The ordinance had been in place since

Mall roof collapses
KITIMAT - A malfunction sprinkler has caused part of the roof at the
City Centre Mall to collapse, officials say. The collapse was over one
of the entrances. There were no injuries reported. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN

Native names to be added to local streets
TERRACE - The city will include First Nations people, culture and
languages when naming streets in the future. The first step will be

Man survives falling through ice
JUNEAU - Officials say a 60-year-old was very fortunate to survive
falling through ice near the Mendenhall Glacier last week. He managed to
pull himself out of the water, but then needed rescue officials help to
get back to his car. "He was out there by himself,
in very cold weather, with unstable ice, too close to the glacier,”

Manager search narrows
WRANGELL - The borough manager selection process is down to three
individuals. Jeff Good, who has been working as interim borough manager
since Nov. 1; Alexandra Angerman, CARES Act coordinator at Wrangell
Cooperative Association; and Kim D. Zimmerman, a retired
U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who serves as borough manager of Lewistown,

Mounties bag illegal weapons
PRINCE RUPERT - RCMP, responding to a report of gun shots on 11th Avenue
last week, found a trove of two dozen illegal weapons. A 33-year-old
