Overdose deaths nearly double
TERRACE - Drug overdose deaths reached a new high with 41 in Northwestern British Columbia in
2021.
There
were 15 deaths in Terrace, compared to nine in Smithers, eight in the
Upper Skeena LHA, five in Prince Rupert and three in Kitimat, according

School stays open
KLUKWAN
- The Klukwan School will remain open for the rest of the school year.
The Chatham School District Board had been waffling on keeping the
school open after it dropped below the state minimum of 10 students. But
interim superintendent John Holst hired a full-time teacher for the

LeBeau still ballin'
HAINES
- Celebrity basketball player and motivational speaker Jesse LeBeau was
in Haines last week to meet with high school students and kick off the
school's new year-long mental health program. LeBeau grew up in
Ketchikan and went on to become a well-known basketball trick ball
artist and has appeared in movies, music videos and television shows.

New library to open

WHITEHORSE - How many people live in the Yukon Territory? Depends on whom you ask. The federal government says 40,232
but the territory says 43,568. The biggest discrepancy is in
Whitehorse, which the territory says has 33,000 residents but the feds

Lady Bears celebrate
HAINES
- The Lady Bears basketball team broke a long streak last week when it
defeated Petersburg 45-41. It was the team's first conference win since 2016.
Rabbits killed in class
MASSET
- School officials are investigating an incident earlier this month
which three live rabbits were killed and then dissected during an
elementary school science lesson. The principal sent a letter to parents
apologizing for not warning the parents in advance and giving the

Hunter bags big caribou
PETERSBURG
- Local hunter Claira Sellenbach harvested a record caribou this winter
in Cold Bay. The caribou had an estimated measurement of more that 413
inches, well above the Boone & Crockett standard on 400. THE
