Alaska interception alleged
PRINCE
RUPERT - Officials from the Gitxsan, Gitanyow, and Wet’suwet’en First
Nations tribes in Northwest BC say that Alaskan interception of salmon
is denying them of their harvesting rights. The three tribes say that
while they are being forced to cut back on harvest for conservation
purposes, large numbers of salmon returning to north coast rivers, are

Rio Tinto fined
KITIMAT
- WorkSafeBC has fined Rio Tinto $678,000 for violating worker air
quality standards at its Kitimat aluminum smelter. Company officials
say it was following procedures that had been approved by the Province.

Hiring process pondered

- The borough assembly is reassessing the borough's hiring process.
Members discussed it at a recent meeting, after a police officer was
fired after posting a picture of his child allegedly performing a Nazi

Taxi safety faulted
WHITEHORSE
- The Yukon Status of Women Council says Whitehorse needs to step up to
improve safety for women riding in area taxis. The council says the
issue has been around for many years, particularly involving indigenous

Composer pens climate change work

Sitka. Hawaiian Jake Shimabukuro's concert was sponsored by the Sitka

Terrace native to head regional government
TERRACE
- Lisa Gasser is the new chief administrator of the Regional District
of Kitimat-Stikine. Gasser, a native of Terrace, is currently the chief
administrative officer of the Village of Hazelton and will join the

Arts fest dedicated to Botello
THORNE BAY - The 2022
Prince of Wales Island Arts Extravaganza will be dedicated to the
memory of Litzi Botello. Botello, of Port Protection, died last August.

Harbor ramp sinks
HAINES
- Heavy snow, ice buildup and a low tide combined to sink a ramp down
to the harbor early last month. The ramp was temporarily fixed to
maintain access, but that a permanent replacement will needed later this

Bus needs more juice

Harbor death investigated
SITKA - Police are investigating the death of 66-year-old Don Petro. Petro's body was found in Sealing Harbor last week. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
Robotics team to State
SKAGWAY
- The Cargo Crocks, the 10-member middle school robotics team is
heading to the state finals for the First Lego League. This year's team
focused on the problem of leaky shipping containers and came up with

Good boy, Duke!!
WHITEHORSE
- Police dog "Duke" found a missing child in the Whistle Bend
neighborhood last week. The child had been missing for several hours
