Nurse returns to Ukraine
PRINCE
RUPERT - A local nurse who survived the Chernobyl nuclear accident as a
child is heading back to Ukraine to help family members get out. Irena
Levkovytska and her husband Anatolii Levkovytskyi have lived in Prince
Rupert for the past five years. They emigrated to Alberta and became

Officials: Census faulty
HAINES
- Officials think the 2020 Census, which found a population decrease of
17 percent is wrong. Officials say the population actually increased up
to 500 residents. They say that the census numbers for areas outside of
town, particularly Mosquito Lake and Covenant Life, are significantly

750,000 visitors expected
SKAGWAY
- Officials are expecting a good cruise season this year, although
nothing like 2019 when more than 1 million visitors arrived. They are
expecting 70 percent capacity on the ships that arrive, meaning around

Juneau on the 'rebound'
JUNEAU
- While much of the country is concerned about the sea level rising,
Juneau is facing a different issue. The climate change that is causing
the oceans to rise elsewhere is causing the glaciers to shrink around
Juneau and the land is rebounding. Areas around Juneau have rebounded

Short term rentals studied
SITKA
- A study by the planning commission indicates that short term vacation
rentals are booming in the community, but that it is not possible to
determine yet whether that is affecting longer term housing
availability. Many of the new vacation rentals are part of existing
houses that are still being used as residences, the study found, and not

Local wrestler best in province
PRINCE
RUPERT - Ninth grader Tyson Nguyen has the won a gold medal in the
provincial championships. Nguyen won the boys 45-kilogram division at
the BC School Sports Wrestling Provincials in Vancouver last month. THE

Trade show planned
CRAIG
- The Prince of Wales Chamber trade show is set for March 26. The event
will take place at the Craig High School. There will be space for 50

7 learn welding basics
KLAWOCK
- Seven POW residents recently completed a welding class at the Klawock
Vocational Center. The four-day class featured the basics of MIG, TIG,

- A caller reported finding what appeared to be a human scalp off the

New buoy tender sought
PETERSBURG
- Local officials say they are hopeful that a replacement for the buoy
tender Elderberry will still be based in Petersburg. The Coast says that
only three of the four "inside waters" tenders will be replaced when

No masks in borough buildings
JUNEAU
- Masking is no longer required at city and borough facilities. But
masking rules remain in effect on transit and at the airport as well as

Parking will cost in future
WRANGELL
- It will likely soon cost money to park at the Wrangell airport,
according to state transportation officials. Petersburg recently began
charging for airport parking and officials say that Sitka will be next.

- A a caller reported finding what appeared to be eagle remains near
the Cross Trail. Police found the remains were those of a chicken. THE

Former mayor charged
TELKWA
- Brad Layton, the former mayor, has been charged with fentanyl
possession. Layton stepped down in January for health reasons. He was
originally arrested in April of last year after police noticed drug
paraphernalia in his car. THE TERRACE STANDARD
