Assembly nixes resignation rule

PETERSBURG - The borough assembly has turned down a proposal that would have required sitting assembly members to resign their seats if they wanted to run for mayor. In Southeast, only Juneau has a similar rule. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

WHITEHORSE - Home prices jumped another eight percent in 2021. The Yukon Bureau of Statistics say the average home cost is now $647,000. The average duplex is going for $538,000, a condo is $468,000 and a mobile home is $420,000. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR

Boat fire injures one

JUNEAU - One man was injured last week when a fire broke out on a small boat in the Auke Bay harbor. Fire officials said that the boat owner managed to extinguish the fire in the engine compartment before the fire department arrived on scene. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Robos are topo!

KITIMAT -The Kitimat robotics team, the Sentinels, has a new name. Provincial Champions. The team won the title in late February when it outpaced other teams in maneuvering its robot, Jonathan the Dragon, over a 144-square-foot field full of barriers. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

Voter incentives pondered

TERRACE - Local officials are looking at ways to boost local election voter turnout, which bottomed out at nine percent at the local election in 2021. Suggestions include increasing mail-in options as well as offering election day freebies such as free swimming and skating and the local sport-plexes and encouraging food trucks to locate near polling stations. AD steps down

WRANGELL - Trisa Rooney is stepping down as high school activities director at the end of the school year. Rooney has worked for the school district for the past 12 years. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

Lions donate $17,000

PRINCE RUPERT - The local Lions Club is donating $17,000 to various community organizations. The money was raised by the Blue Knuckle Fishing Derby in December. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government says now is not the time to lower gas prices by forgoing the territorial gas tax. Current gasoline prices in the territory are averaging the equivalent of $7.15 a gallon. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR

SITKA - A caller reported that a driver had cut him off as he was walking near 700 Halibut Point Road. The driver said the man was not watching where he was going. A police officer mediated. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
Squatters camp cleared
TERRACE - City workers cleared out a squatters came near the airport last week. In cleaning up the camp, they found several illegal weapons and a quantity of illegal drugs. There were no arrests, but police said action was pending. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Longtime resident dies
PETERSBURG - Claude "Bud" File died in late February at the age of 98. File, who worked in the fisheries and timber industries, had lived in Petersburg for 81 years. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
