Wages up, but still lag
HAINES - Wages rose in the Haines Borough by approximately 8 percent between 2010 and 2020, reaching an average of $40,632 a year. But the state department of labor said that was below the state average of 11 percent and that Haines had the sixth lowest gain in the state. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
3 killed in car crash
KITIMAT - The RCMP is seeking witnesses to a deadly crash on Highway 37 near Onion Lake between Kitimat and Terrace earlier this month. Three people, including two youth, died when a passenger vehicle crossed the center line and hit a commercial vehicle head-on. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
Masks to be optional
JUNEAU - Masks will become optional in Juneau schools on April 4. The school board voted unanimously for the proposal after defeating several amendments that would have made the proposal contingent upon other benchmarks. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Police salaries to rise
PETERSBURG - The borough assembly has agreed to hike salaries for police officers and dispatchers to address a common statewide problem, lack of applicants for open positions. Officer salaries will now start at $28  an hour and dispatchers at $22. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
RCMP: No go zones a no go
TERRACE - The RCMP says that a proposal to bar "problem" individuals from certain parts of the community is "unenforceable." The city council had been considering "banning" repeat offenders from certain areas of town to limit criminal activity. THE TERRACE STANDARD
$2M water system grant
WRANGELL - The borough will get more than $2 million from the federal government to improve the community water system. The money will be used to build a pipeline connection between the upper reservoir and the water treatment plant. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
New fire chief
SKAGWAY - Emily Rauscher has been named the new borough fire chief. Rauscher, the current EMS director, has been with the department for 10 years. THE SKAGWAY NEWS
Arts events open up
HAIDA GWAII - The Haida Gwaii Arts Council has announced a return to in-person events, for the first time in two years. Up first is a traveling one-woman play called "Till Death: The Six Wives of Henry VIII" which will visit several communities on the islands in the next week. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
EOC ends COVID response
HAINES - The Haines Borough Emergency Operations Center deactivated it COVID response function on March 1. Officials said that the EOC could reactivate if there are significant surges in the future. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Glacier trip planned
PETERSBURG - HIgh school students are prepping for one of the yearly highlights, a continuing survey of conditions on the LeConte Glacier. The survey has been taking place since 1983.
Taxes going up
PRINCE RUPERT - Residents are likely looking at a property tax increase this year. The proposed city budget includes a 3.6 percent property tax increase. This increase is on top of property assessments that have increased up to 30 percent in the past two years because of the sharp increase in home values in the region. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW

JUNEAU - Fire officials say that a home-made heating device was responsible for a fire that destroyed a vehicle last month. The occupant had lit the denatured alcohol fueled device which then caught the console on fire and burned the vehicle. The fire marshal says lighting anything inside a car is a very bad idea. Big Bob to retire
TERRACE - "Big Bob" Park first went to work at the All Seasons Source for Sports store as a 14-year-old. Five years late,  he purchased the store. Now, 50 years after first going to work there, Park is retiring and the store is closing. Park is looking forward to retirement. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Come from (kinda) away
KITIMAT - The Coast Mountains School District  82 is hiring a new superintendent. Aaron Callaghan will start in August. He is currently in Nova Scotia. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
