Flood season coming 

 

WHITEHORSE - With warmer weather coming, flood season is also nearing. Officials say that eight of the 11 area mountain basins have the highest snowpacks ever recorded and that the other three are also well above normal. Kitkatla triumphs 

 

PRINCE RUPERT - Kitkatla won its third senior title in the past four years at the All Native Basketball Tournament. It defeated Metlakatla (the Alaska one) 85-70 in the finale. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW 

 

Dyea road still bumpy 

 

SKAGWAY - The Dyea road has finally been "graded" to remove some of the potholes. But residents say the grading is not getting an "A" grade. THE SKAGWAY NEWS 

 

Open fires doused 

 

TERRACE - Open fires are banned in the region for the foreseeable future. The ban is to prevent wildfires from starting. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

The best small town? 

 

SMITHERS - What is the "best small town in northern BC?" Smithers is facing off against Bella Coola in the final round of public voting. The results will be announced at the end of April. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS 

 

Hospital property transferred 

 

SITKA - The borough assembly has passed the final step in transferring the former Sitka Community Hospital properties to SEARHC which is now providing community health care. The $25 million sale price will go into the Sitka Permanent Fund. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL 

 

Guess it isn't really "flat." 

 

KITIMAT - The District of Kitimat has voted to increase the "flat tax rate" by 3.75 percent. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL 

 

No Parks employees 

 

HAINES - Alaska State Parks has two full-time employees in Haines to oversee the four state parks in the borough. Sort of. Both positions are currently vacant and it may months before they are filled. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS 

 

School price jumps 

 

WHITEHORSE - Cost estimates on the new Whistle Bend Elementary School have ballooned from $32 million to $58 million even before construction has started.  Lots of finger pointing is going on. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR 

 

New principal 

 

WRANGELL - Ann Hillburn is the new Evergreen Elementary School Principal. Hillburn is currently the special education teacher at the high school and the middle school. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL 

 

Hospital design watered down 

 

TERRACE - The Mills Memorial Hospital will be a little less colorful than planned. Early proposals for the $622 million regional hospital to be significantly orange, but the latest design will be more gray and white. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

The sea is in her future 

 

JUNEAU -Juneau Douglas High senior Elin Antaya has been named winner of the Alaska SeaLife Center Hoffman-Greene Ocean Youth Award for 2022. Antaya spent last year as an intern on Prince of Wales Island with the University of Alaska Fairbanks fisheries department as the Hutton Scholar for the American Fishery Society. Town promoter passes 

 

SMITHERS - Residents are remembering former town councilor Ron Purnell who died this month at 92. Purnell was at the forefront of efforts in the early 1990s to create the "ski hill" and town's "alpine theme." THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS 

 

Food comas? 

 

PRINCE RUPERT - The new Eat Street food truck location is complete with stalls for three food trucks and a 24-hour restroom facility. But officials say that the RCMP will have to boost enforcement to keep people from sleeping in the new restrooms. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW
