Mudslide closes road 

 

WHITEHORSE - A large mudslide has closed Robert Service Way for the foreseeable future. About 4,000 cubic meters of material crossed the road last weekend and also destroyed the nearby White Pass and Yukon railway tracks.. There were no injuries. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR  

  

No longer excursions 

 

SKAGWAY – The White Pass Railway will not have day train excursions to Fraser and Carcross this summer. Challenges with Canadian border crossing regulations are being blamed. THE SKAGWAY NEWS  

   

Evictions targeted 

 

PRINCE RUPERT - A new bylaw has been approved to make it harder to evict tenants in the community. The bylaw also establishes standards for housing occupancy and encourages the development of long-term rentals rather than vacation rentals. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW  

  

They lied about arrest 

 

PETERSBURG – Two residents have pleaded guilty to giving false information regarding a police arrest in 2020. The two individuals accused the officer of inappropriate sexual conduct during a DUI arrest, but body cam footage showed otherwise. THE PETERSBURG PILOT  

  

Reserve gains 297 acres 

 

KITIMAT - The Haisla Nation has added nearly 300 acres to its reserve. The 297 acres was deeded recently from the Canadian federal government. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL  

  

Cruises at 60 percent 

 

SITKA – Early cruise ship visits are showing that ships are between 55 and 60 percent full. If every ship was full a total of 460,000 cruise passengers would arrive in town this summer. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL  

  

Ferry cancelations strand 1,200 

 

HAIDA GWAII - More than 1,200 passengers were affected by a recent week of BC Ferry cancellations on the North Coast. The culprit? A crew member COVID outbreak. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER  

  

Town historian dies 

 

SMTHERS - Residents are remembering Harry Kruisselbrink, a former town councillor and published historian of the community, who died last week. Kruisselbrink and his wife Audrey - both were post WW II Dutch immigrants - met and married in Smithers. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS 

 

Boro considers no tax on groceries 

  

JUNEAU – Voters will likely get to weigh in on whether to exempt food purchases from sales taxes. Currently the borough assembly is weighing a plan to exempt food year round, but too also raised the sales tax from 5 percent to 6 percent during the summer. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE  

 

Trash fence erected 

 

TERRACE - Garbage and litter from the Walmart parking lot has been blowing onto the Riverwalk Trail for some time and the company has shown no interest in building a fence. So, the city council has decided spend money from the Community Forest fund to build the fence itself. THE TERRACE STANDARD   

  

Union: Fire/rescue crews overtaxed 

 

KITIMAT - Union officials saying an increasing number of fire and ambulance calls is overwhelming the current 23 percent fire and rescue personnel. More than 3,000 calls are projected for next year, which would require up to 40 fire and rescue personnel. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL  

  

Bruton honored 

 

WHITEHORSE - Bill Bruton is the Whitehorse Volunteer of the Year. Bruton was chosen for his volunteer work with the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR  

  

Ambulance or tank? 

 

JUNEAU – There is a difference of opinion about a new vehicle the Juneau police department wants to purchase. The department is calling the Bearcat G3 “armored security vehicle” a “heavy duty ambulance” but some members of the borough assembly are calling it a “tank.” THE JUNEAU EMPIRE  

  

Owens the “ice cream dude” 

 

TERRACE - At 21, Austin Owens is the "ice cream baron" of Terrace. "The ice cream dude" has been running the Chill Soda Shop since he was 16. THE TERRACE STANDARD
