School wins $15,000

WRANGELL – Wrangell High School students finished in the top five nationally in Vans Custom Culture nationwide art contest. Several hundred schools competed and the top five finish brought Wrangell a $15,000 prize. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

Biker raises awareness 

 

HAIDA GWAII - Frank Sapach is on the road again. A decade ago, the now 70-year-old Haida Gwaii resident biked across Canada with his dog Sheila to raise awareness for abused and homeless pets. Now, he is on the road with a different dog, Samantha, to raise awareness for elder abuse and the challenges they face dealing with the medical system. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER 

 

Refugee fundraisers nets $20,000 

 

PRINCE RUPERT -The Rupert Society Refugee Support group is halfway to its goal of raising $50,000 to help Ukrainians resettle in Prince Rupert. Nearly $20,000 alone was raised last week at a fundraiser at the Lester Centre of the Arts featuring more than 70 dancers, musicians, deejays and other volunteers. Lucas sets school record 

 

PETERSBURG – Uriah Lucas etched his name into Petersburg High School history recently. Not only did he recently win the 3200 meter race in the Capital City Invitational, but he set the school record time of 10 minutes, 12.46 seconds. THE PETERSBURG PILOT 

 

Local doctor gets provincial award 

 

TERRACE - Dr. Jaco Strydom has been awarded the 2022 My Family Doctor honor by the B.C. College of Family Physicians. Dr. Strydom moved to Terrace from South Africa in 2004. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

Property taxes rise 

 

PRINCE RUPERT - Residents will see their property taxes go up an average of $144 this year. The City Council recently approved a 3.6 percent mill levy increase. THE PRINCE RUPERT DAILY NEWS 

 

Road stays closed 

WHITEHORSE - Robert Service Way will likely remain closed for several more weeks. The street was closed by a mudslide in late April. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR 

 

Flagpole added 

 

KITIMAT - A fourth flagpole will be erected at the District Offices to make it easier to handle flag flying requests in the future. Currently there are poles for the Canadian, BC and District flags but - for example - a request to fly the Ukrainian flag was recently approved by the council and the District flag had to temporarily come down. Rover cleans ocean floor 

 

PRINCE RUPERT - The ocean floor near Prince Rupert got a bit of a cleaning this spring. Nearly 1,400 pounds of fishing gear such as lost nets and traps were collected from the bottom by a  

remote submersible hired by Lax Kw'alaams Fishing Enterprises was collected and them brought to shore. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW 

 

Blue Jays fund local field 

 

SMITHERS -Witset First Nation's womens/kids ballfield is getting a facelift courtesy of the Toronto Blue Jays. The MLB team has granted $150,000 for the project. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS

PETERSBURG – A moose was reported wandering on Haugen Drive and 8th Street. THE PETERSBURG PILOT 

 

Drive by shooting probed 

TERRACE - The RCMP is investigating a drive-by shooting last week on Pear Street. The man's wounds are not life threatening and the Mounties say the shooting is connected to an earlier altercation near the Terrace Inn Liquor Store. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

Not hard to find 

 

KITIMAT - Police are investigating a break-in at a business last week on Commercial Avenue. Surveillance video shows a white flatbed truck with distinctive door decals and a bright red ladder was involved. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL 

 

Zoning changes proposed 

 

WHITEHORSE - A proposed community plan calls for the development of more housing in the next decade. Building height will also change from a maximum of around 75 feet to just over 100 feet. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR
