SITKA - Officials say they are monitoring earthquakes and the shifting of magma underneath Mt. Edgecumb volcano but that there is no need for public concern. Recent satellite surveys show that a section of the dormant volcano has bulged out about a foot since 2018. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
Downtown fire damages buildings
PRINCE RUPERT - Fire officials are investigating the cause of a large fire that significantly damaged two buildings on Third Avenue last weekend. Pottery taken in smash and grab
TERRACE - A thief with a yen for art smashed a window in a local business and took four pieces of locally made pottery last week. Artist Annemarie Fux says the pieces are worth $1,500. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Trucks in short supply

Artists honored

PRINCE RUPERT - Three local artists have honored at the Prince Rupert Community Arts Council Awards.  Rudy Kelly and Joan Mostad were each awarded the honor of Outstanding Artist with a $1,000 endowment. Kelly was sighted for his contributions to theatre, acting and literature. Mostad was credited for her artistic endeavors mainly in acrylics, among other mediums. Fire damages historic chapel

TERRACE - Fire officials are investigating a blaze that severely damaged the Usk Pioneer Chapel east of Terrace on Highway 16. They say there is currently no sign of arson at the nearly 60-year-old building. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Anacapa to sail away

Vehicle vandals sought

KITIMAT - The RCMP says it has two possible suspects in a rash of vandalism to seven vehicles. The damaged vehicles were located on Stikine St., Kechika St., Columbia Ave., and Little Wedeene St. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

School under construction

KITSUMKALEM - Work has begun on the 'Na Aksa Gyilak'yoo School just of Highway 16. The multi-million-dollar facility is expected to be ready in September of 2023. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Super Pod swims by

PETERSBURG - It's not unusual to see killer whales in the area this time of year, but residents were recently treated to a visit by a "super pod." Twenty-four individuals were counted in a pod that was spotted off Hungry Point Road last week. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Man arrested in fireworks fire

KITWANGA - The RCMP has arrested a man in connection with a fire near Highway 37 last week, Witnesses saw the man using fireworks in the area. The fire took several days to bring under control. THE TERRACE STANDARD
