Two swim away from plane crash
JUNEAU - Two people are in stable condition following a plane crash near Douglas Island. The Coast Guard says the plane crashed about 100 feet offshore near Outer Point and the pilot and passenger were able to swim to shore. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Soccer coach on breakaway
TERRACE - Terrace's loss is Calgary's gain: Longtime local soccer coach Nik Kollias is moving east. Kollias, 70,  has helmed numerous local soccer teams and taught thousands of kids the rudiments of the game since he came to Terrace in 1976. He has also provided more than $40,000 in scholarships to local students over the years. He is moving to be closer to his grandchildren. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Plank's salmon wins Derby
SITKA - Savanah Plank's 40.2 king salmon is the winner in the 2022 Sitka Salmon Derby. Plank landed her fish near Middle Island on the first weekend of the derby in May. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
Smelter still not at full speed
KITIMAT - The strike dispute between Rio Tinto and the Unifor Local 2301 workforce may have ended seven months ago, but the Kitimat smelter is still far from resuming normal operations. The company says that only one of the smelter's 291 "pots" is currently operating and that will take until 2023 before the facility is back at full production. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
New city hall proposed for vote
JUNEAU - Voters will likely be asked to approve a new city hall this fall. The cost of the facility will likely be around $40 million. The new hall would be built on Whittier Street. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Berg volunteer of the year
PETERSBURG - Dave Berg is the Petersburg Community Foundation's community volunteer of the year. Berg said he will put the $1,000 award toward control equipment for the annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Youth get good tickets
TERRACE - The local RCMP is ticketing local youth, but in a good way. Officers are handing out "positive tickets" when they see youth engaged in healthy, positive lifestyle choices. The youth can redeem those "tickets" for prizes at community sponsors. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Shelter to release 76 bears
SMITHERS - The Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter is on its way to releasing a record number of bears back into the wild this spring. The shelter expects to release 76 bears, roughly double last year's total. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS
Longtime nurse honored
PETERSBURG - Marlene Cushing was named the Norwegian American of the Year at the recent Little Norway Festival. Cushing was honored for her long career as the town's public health nurse. THE PETERSBURG PILO
Skeena flooding
TERRACE - Rain and snowmelt is causing the Skeena River to rise past flood stage. Last week, evacuation orders were announced for the communities of Old Remo, New Remo and Usk. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Oldest school to be replaced
WHITEHORSE - A replacement for the oldest school in Whitehorse is being planned but no cost estimate is yet available. The Ecole Whitehorse Elementary School is more than 70 years old. Recently the cost estimate for a new elementary school in the Whistle Bend Elementary School jumped from $25 million to more than $50 million. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR
