SOUTHEAST LOG 6-25-22Sewage may need disinfectionHAINES - The community is one of nine Alaskan towns facing a possibly expensive change to how it handles its sewage. Haines currently has a federal waiver, but in the future may have to add disinfection to the process that could cost millions of dollars. Negotiations with the Portland Art Museum began in 2002 and concluded in 2019 but COVID delayed the actual return until this month. THE WRANGELL SENTINELRules violated in milk incidentJUNEAU - A "sip before serve" rule was reportedly violated by a food service worker who was involved in a situation in which floor sealant was served as "milk" to 14 students at a Juneau school summer program last week. Other rules involving storage of the "white colored" floor sealant were also apparently violated. THE JUNEAU EMPIREDerby commencesCRAIG - The seasonal King Salmon Derby has started. The derby began on June 1 and will end on August 15. Top prize in the derby is $3,000 and there are numerous other prizes. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POSTTeens charged in fireSITKA - Two teenage boys have been charged in the recent arson that caused $100,000 damage at the Crescent Harbor dock. Charges are pending against two other juveniles that police say were involved. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINELMan drowns at dockSKAGWAY - A 32-year-old man from Florida jumped off the Broadway Dock recently and drowned. Troopers say that the man swam around for a while but then likely got hypothermic and was unable to swim to shore. Rescue workers responded immediately but it was too late. THE SKAGWAY NEWSMerger ponderedPETERSBURG - Discussions have begun over a possible merger between the Petersburg Medical Center and the Mountain View Manor Assisted Living Facility. The Borough Assembly recently okayed the negotiations because it has been hard to find staff for the Manor. THE PETERSBURG PILOTLYFT lands on POWCRAIG - Island Ride is no longer providing transportation services on Prince of Wales Island. But LYFT recently announced it will be operating on POW. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POSTWittstock retiresPETERSBURG - Long time special education teacher and administrator Bridget Wittstock retired earlier this month after 29 years with the school district. Her coworkers held a surprise party for her that featured a specially written song by the "Luncheonettes." THE PETERSBURG PILOTPool improvements on tapWRANGELL - The borough is considering nearly a million dollars in improvements to the community pool and recreation center building. The funding would come state grants and make improvements to the heating and ventilation system as well as the siding of the buildings and the gutters and downspouts. The revelers used the 3-hour-delay to have a giant tailgate party that involved frisbees, cornhole, volleyball and sunbathing. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWSLife in a small townSKAGWAY - Longtime local journalist and business owner Jeff Brady was honored recently with the community's Don Hather Wall of Fame Award for service to the Skagway School. It had been suggested that Brady receive the Helen B. Clarke Skagway Community Service Award, but since he gives out that award each year, he couldn't give it to himself. Police contacted the driver who told them he was late for work.
