Salmon plant closes
SITKA
- Sitka Salmon Shares business boomed during the pandemic, but business
tailed off in the past year and the company closed its processing plant
earlier this month. Approximately 40 workers were laid off. THE DAILY

Premier visits Tahltan
TERRACE
- British Columbia Premier John Horgan recently made the first premier
visit to the traditional Tahltan Band lands in northwestern BC in 30
years. During his two-day visit, Horgan made stops in Dease Lake,
Telegraph Creek and Iskut. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Eagle roosts installed
HAINES
- More than 175 tree trunks are in the mud in the Chilkat River along
the Haines Highway, but they are not a big foot mystery. The trunks were
put there to provide roosts for eagles after numerous cottonwood trees

First ever Pride march
SITKA
- Approximately 250 people turned out last week for the first ever
Sitka Pride March. The march began at Totem Square and went down Lincoln

Wounded grizzly sought
SMITHERS
- Conservation officers are trying to track down a grizzly that was
photographed near Highway 37 with an arrow in its head last week.
Hunting grizzlies has been illegal in BC since 2017. THE SMITHERS

Rockslide damages ship
SKAGWAY
- No one was injured last week when a small rockslide occurred near the
Railroad Dock. Passengers on the Discovery Princess say there was some

Organ needs work
JUNEAU
- The 94-year-old Kimball organ in the State Office Building lobby
needs a tune up. Some notes are not working, and other repairs need to
be made to the instrument which entertains people during the lunch hour.

$4 million for housing, daycare
KITIMAT
- More than $4 million is available for the construction of
transitional housing and a daycare facility on Quatsino Boulevard. The
project is being sponsored by the Tamitik Status of Women. THE KITIMAT

Sitka second in water taste
SITKA
- Sitka's drinking water is the second best in America. At a recent,
American Water Works Association taste test competition, only Johnson
County, Kansas water was judged better than Sitka. Sioux Falls, South

Adult dodgeball is now a thing
PRINCE
RUPERT - Recreational dodgeball is coming to the Jim Ciccone Centre
small gym this month. Organizers say that a lack of sports and "fun
activities" for adults is leading to the drop-in sessions. THE PRINCE

Blue Ticket film screened
JUNEAU
- A filmed version of a local history play was shown in the community
last week. The film and play are named "Blue Ticket" and are about a
time in the early 1960s when gay men in Juneau were given a "blue
ticket," a one-way pass on the ferry system, to leave the community. THE

City Hall lawn may be homeless camp
TERRACE
- The city is considering using the front lawn of city hall for
overnight camping. Officials say that the growing number of outdoor
homeless camps is a problem in the community and there needs to a
central location for the outdoor camps. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Locker room project awaits funding
HAINES
- A long awaited renovation of the locker rooms at Haines High School
will take place if the Governor approves the funding granted recently by
the governor. More than $600,000 in state funding is on the table to go
along with more than $300,000 in local funds. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
3rd time's the charm?
WHITEHORSE
- The Vanier Catholic Secondary School is getting a new name, The St.
Francis of Assisi School, after it came to light recently that the
priest it was named after, Jean Vanier, had allegedly abused several
women. Previously, the school was named after Yukon politician George
Jeckell, but that name was changed to Vanier after it was found out that
Jeckell had held racist views of indigenous peoples in the territory.
