contest will be covered up after the building it was on changed

Pond seeks mayorship
PRINCE
RUPERT - Former mayor Herb Pond has filed to run for mayor of Prince
Rupert. Pond was mayor from 2002 to 2008. Current mayor Lee Brain says

Landslide study funding sought
SKAGWAY
- The Skagway Traditional Council is supporting a proposal to expand
geohazard monitoring in Southeast. Of particular interest is landslide
research in light of the recent landslide that caused some damage to the

WHITEHORSE
- Yukon Premier Sandy Silver was given the "honor" recently of being
the 100,000th person to be known to have sampled the infamous "Sourtoe
Cocktail." The cocktail is a world-famous tradition dating back to 1973.
It involves drinking a shot of whisky with a mummified human toe in it.

Giant halibut caught
HAINES
- Local fishermen Cole Thomas and Jeff Wackerman had a good trip
recently. They landed a 425-pound halibut on the Raven's Walk in Icy

Black bear hunting banned
KITIMAT
- Coastal First Nations officials hope that a recently announced
two-year ban on black bear hunting in the Great Bear Rainforest between
Prince Rupert and Bella Coola will lead to a revitalization of the
Kermode or Spirit bears. The hunting ban will last until June 20, 2024.

Visitor dies on charter boat
SITKA
- Police say that a 42-year-old Utah man died on a charter boat in
Salisbury Sound last week. The apparent cause was a heart attack. THE

Port financial boss retires
PRINCE
RUPERT - The longtime financial head of the Prince Rupert Port
Authority is stepping down after 30 years. Joe Rektor will be replaced

Fishers fined for infractions
TERRACE
- Four Alberta men have been fined $4,500 after they were found to have
illegally taken ling cod, halibut and crab in their possession outside

COVID numbers up

- The community is experiencing a COVID 19 outbreak. Officials say that
a recent week had more than 40 new cases, more than the three previous

Highway death investigated
SMITHERS
- The RCMP is investigating the death of a 40-year-old Winnipeg man on
Highway 16 last week. Officials say the man was run over by a pickup

Bystanders keep boat afloat
JUNEAU
- Quick action by bystanders kept a boat from sinking at Statter Harbor
last week. The Alaska Shel had just returned from a charter trip when
it began taking on water, but bystanders quickly secured it to the dock

Local teen meets NBA star
PETERSBURG
- Local teenager Joseph Tagaban has been granted his wish by the Make A
Wish Foundation. The 15-year-old who is suffering from leukemia got to
meet Klay Thompson, a member of the NBA champion Golden State Warriors.

ATM deaths reported
TERRACE
- The RCMP has confirmed there have been two recent deaths of people
riding ATVs in the Terrace area. Most recently a young woman died in
accident. Police say she was not wearing a helmet. THE TERRACE STANDARD
