Road repairs needed
PRINCE RUPERT - The community
needs upwards of $600 million to replace aging infrastructure, outgoing
Mayor Lee Brain announced recently. One of the biggest needs is nearly
$100 million just to repair the roads, which Brain says were built
incorrectly using salt products that decay the underlying piping and hog

HAINES - When Alaska Seaplanes
pilot Sam Riggs flies between Haines and Juneau, his passengers should
ask him to "hum a tune or two." Riggs is also a singer/songwriter with
more than 30 million "streams" on Spotify and a channel with 30,000

Director Mason Villarma apparently has some free time. It was announced
recently that Villarma will also be the high school assistant

Carvers get national honors
OLD MASSET - Haida Carvers Robert
and Reg Davidson were in the most recent Order of Canada honors list.
Robert was promoted from member to officer in the Order of Canada. Reg
was made a member of the Order. The awards are Canada's most prestigious

Merchants oppose program
SKAGWAY - A large group of local
merchants is opposed to a medallion program proposed by Princess
Cruises. The program would allow passengers to use the medallions for
ship access and ship purchases and would also allow local merchants to
be part of the program, but it would charge those merchants a 17.99
percent fees on items they sell the passengers. More than 65 merchants
have signed a letter opposing the program. THE SKAGWAY NEWS
Egan remembered
JUNEAU - Residents are fondly
remembering former Mayor and State Senator Dennis Egan who died last
week. Egan, the son of Alaska's first Governor, was also a member of the
Alaska Radio Hall of Fame and the long-time host of the local Problem

Rupert, Port Edward make peace
PRINCE RUPERT - Mayors Lee Brain
of Prince Rupert and Knut Bjorndal of Port Edward say the communities
have resolved a dispute that has lingered for nearly 40 years. At issue
were taxes from the Ridley Island facility and mutual aid, fire and
water agreements. The communities will also work together on a regional

new Alaska Airlines station manager in Petersburg. Dolbeare was

Tour guide rescues 5
SKAGWAY - Will Harbison of Skagway
Float Tours is being credited with rescuing five passengers when a
Chilkat Guides boat flipped over last week. The accident took place on

Code talkers honored
SITKA -The Alaska Native
Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood have honored Harvey Jacobs and
Mark Jacobs Jr. The Sitka brothers, now deceased, were part of the
