1,000 take part in Iron Man

Fire crews save historic restaurant
PRINCE RUPERT - Quick action by fire crews saved a century-old restaurant from burning down last week. Officials say that a kitchen fire at the West End Restaurant was knocked down in a matter of minutes, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the building on Third Avenue. Kirby resigns from assembly

Crime high on the islands
MASSETT - The local RCMP detachment reports that the communities of Massett, Old Massett and Port Clements have the 12th highest crime severity rate in the province. The good news is that the local rate has dropped nearly 3 percent in the past year. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
Fiber optic grant approved

Lester Center booked

Arson charge in house fire

Delegation seeks pole repatriation
PRINCE RUPERT - A Nisga'a delegation is going to Scotland to discuss the return of a memorial pole that was taken out of the Nass Valley in 1929. The delegation will meet with officials from the National Museum of Scotland where the pole currently resides. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW

Wolf-dog pups rescued
HAINES - A Colorado organization has rescued six suspected wolf-dog puppies that were born in February. The dogs will go to sanctuaries in the lower 48. They are illegal to possess in Alaska. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

PETERSBURG - It's bear season in Little Norway. Officers responded to 30 calls involving bears in one recent five-day period. Many paintballs were deployed. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
