was recently in town looking to buy property, but their efforts were
reportedly unsuccessful. In recent years, the Brown family also

Fire likely human set
TERRACE
- A 40-acre wildfire between Terrace and Kitwanga along Highway 16
poses no threat to public safety, officials say. But, they say, the fire

- Spruce the Moose is cutting quite a figure in downtown Wrangell.

Music fest returns
HAIDA
GWAII -The Edge of the World music festival is taking place at the
Tlell Fall Fairgrounds this week. The event, which features local and
national acts, had been cancelled for the past three years because of

Corrigan dies
SKAGWAY
- Residents are remembering Dennis Corrigan, who died recently at 79. A
Skagway resident since the mid 1970s, Corrigan was instrumental in
restoring several historic buildings in the downtown area. THE SKAGWAY

5 seats, no challengers
JUNEAU
- There are no challengers to the five incumbents for seats on the
borough assembly and school board. The filing deadline has passed and
the only filers for assembly seats are the incumbents Carole Triem, Wade
Bryson and Greg Smith. The only school board filers are incumbents Emil
Mackey and Deedie Sorenson. It is still possible for write-in

Landfill fees rise
HAINES
-Community Waste Solutions will be raising the cost of trash disposal
at the landfill. Currently, residents are charged 40 cents per pound,
but starting in mid-August, they will be charged a per bag fee of either
$7 or $14. CWS says the process will speed up because attendants won't

School survivors not appeased
KITSUMKALUM
- Roger Gray of the Nass Valley and Thomas Samuels of Haida Gwaii say
that Pope Francis' recent apology for the treatment of thousands of
Canadian Native children at Residential Schools for more than a century
is "too little, too late." Both men were forced to attend the

Dredging planning moves ahead
PETERSBURG
- The schedule for the dredging of South Harbor will be decided soon.
Borough officials are to meet with the contractor, Western Marine, to
plan for the removal of 83,000 square yards of material from the harbor
to make all stalls accessible no matter what the tide. THE PETERSBURG

Shellfish harvest closed
PRINCE
RUPERT - Waters near Prince Rupert and Kitimat have been closed to
shellfish harvest by Oceans and Fisheries Canada. The reason: marine

Boro may seek building repair bonds
WRANGELL
- The borough assembly is pondering whether to seek voter approval for
$15 million in bonds. The money would go towards rehab work at the aging
Public Safety Building and roof repair at local schools. THE WRANGELL

Boro won't seek parade grounds
HAINES
- The borough is no longer interested in purchasing the Fort William
Seward Parade Grounds. The borough had been negotiating with the current
owner, Alaska Indian Arts, but those negotiations are over. THE CHILKAT

Boro raises salaries
SITKA
- City workers will receive a 7.95 percent pay increase over the next
three years. Approximately 65 employees are covered by the agreement
