Company fined in tugboat sinking

RUPERT - Wainwright Marine has been fined more than $50,000 by
Transport Canada for failing to follow employment and safety
requirements in staffing the tugboat Ingenika which sank last year near

New fire director

- Aaron Hankins has been named the new Fire/EMS/SAR director for the
borough. Hankins has volunteered for the fire department for the past

Riders raise $12,000
PRINCE
RUPERT - Three Prince Rupert riders in the Tour de North have raised
more than $12,000 for children's cancer research. Nathan Hokazono, Glen
Kirkland and Kelsey Sonnel took part in the recent 600-mile bike race

Hospital construction keeps pace

- A major milestone is taking place at the Mill Memorial Hospital
construction site as the 200-foot-high cranes are being dismantled. The

Sockeye run bounces back

- The Chilkat River sockeye run has bounced back after two consecutive
poor seasons, officials say. Escapement was at 85,000 salmon in early

Tribes promote climate initiative
KITIMAT
- The Haisla, Nisga'a and Metlakatla First Nations are promoting a
climate initiative they say will help lower carbon initiatives. A major
portion of the initiative is promoting natural gas use through a $40

Conference considers the Stikine
WRANGELL
- Tribal members from both the US and Canada talked about how to
protect the Stikine River watershed recently. The Sharing Our Knowledge

Boys keep bus from crashing
SMITHERS
- Two teenage boys are being credited with keeping a school bus from
crashing after the driver apparently suffered a medical emergency.
Police say that one boy took the steering while and another applied the
brakes to keep the bus from hitting a bunch of trees last week. There
were no student injuries and police didn't update the condition of the

Landslide dams river
PRINCE
RUPERT - Fisheries officials say it is too early to assess the damage
to fish runs after a large landslide struck the Ecstall River, which is
near the mouth to the Skeena River. Approximately 100,000 coho, chum and
chinook salmon return to the Ecstall each year. THE PRINCE RUPERT

Compost facility planned
HAINES
- Federal grant funding will be used to help pay for the community-wide
compost facility, according to the Takshanuk Watershed Council. The

Mudslides cut off highway
WHITEHORSE
- Multiple mudslides cut off portions of the Klondike Highway between
Whitehorse and Dawson City last week. Most of the slides were cleared in

Man sets house on fire
KITIMAT
- Police took a man into custody on Swan Street after he allegedly set
his house on fire, which then spread to other dwellings. Police say the
man also attempted to ram police vehicles with his vehicle. THE KITIMAT

Smoking saves?
PRINCE
RUPERT - Off duty paramedic Sasha Beer went outside for a last
cigarette before bed and noticed smoke coming out of a neighbor's house.
Beer then entered the burning building and pulled his neighbor to

Firefighter injured in hunt
HAINES
- Longtime local firefighter, EMT and ambulance crewman Al Badgley
needed to be rescued himself last month. Badgley fell 20 feet from a
tree limb while moose hunting near Nenana. He had to be helicoptered to
Fairbanks and then medi-flighted to Anchorage after breaking his back.
