No camping at Portage Cove

Parents protest aide hiring
KITIMAT - A group of parents protested outside the Nechako School last week. They say the school  district has hired a teaching assistant who was previously accused of inappropriately touching students at the Haisla Community School in 2019. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
ATV road use going well
PETERSBURG - Local public safety officials say that thus far having ATVs on the streets of Petersburg is working out. Petersburg is one of several towns that began allowing ATVs and four-wheelers on city streets following a change in state law earlier this year. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Honor pole raised
KLAWOCK - A totem pole has been raised along the Craig-Klawock Highway in remembrance of all missing and murdered indigenous women. The pole specifically honors Judylee Guthrie of Hydaburg, who was murdered in 2016. The pole was erected near the place Guthrie's body was found. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST
Former Sitka mayor dies

Enrollment low, but hope high
KLUKWAN - Enrollment remains below 10 at the Klukwan but local officials say that a positive attitude from the new Chatham District Superintendent Ralph Watkins has people hoping the school will remain open this year. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Learner pole raised
TERRACE - A new totem pole has been raised at the Coast Mountain College Terrace campus. The pole is called Wii Gyemsiga Siwilaawksat, meaning where learners are content. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Property assessment approved
WRANGELL - The borough assembly has approved a proposal to reassess all the property in town. Officials say that past property assessments have been inconsistent, so it is time to reevaluate all commercial and residential property in the area. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
Six seek three assembly seats
HAINES - There are six candidates running for three seats on the Borough Assembly. Ben Autman-Moore, Eric Holle, Margarette Jones, Bill Jurewitz, Jerry Lapp and Gabe Thomas are the October 4 ballot. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Port tax cap targeted
PRINCE RUPERT - A group of citizens wants the Port of Prince Rupert to pay to more for the impacts it creates in the community. The group has launched an effort to repeal the current cap on taxes the facility pays the community. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW
Bus goes in ditch

Logging company owner dies
PETERSBURG - Residents are remembering Raymond Olsen, who died  in town recently at the age of 96. Olsen had lived in Petersburg for nearly half a century and operated Olsen and Son's Logging for many years. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
