PRINCE
RUPERT - A local commercial diver has been fined $12,000 for getting
too close to a pod of killer whales in Prince Rupert harbor. Officials
say the diver also violated rules by circling the whales too closely
with his boat before going into the water near the pod. THE PRINCE

Trail added to new network
SKAGWAY
- The Jánwu Sítʼi/Denver Glacier Trail is now part of the Old-Growth
Forest Network (OGFN). The 3.2-mile trail is 5 miles from Skagway. THE

- Time sped up again last week in Northwest BC. Whenever BC Hydro goes
offline for maintenance, area power is generated by the Rio Tinto's
Kemano generators which have a faster cycle rate. The Rio Tinto
generators add about 12 seconds to every hour they are online. THE

Eagle gets better roost
JUNEAU
- Lady Baltimore has some new digs on Mount Roberts. The Juneau Raptor
Center has unveiled a new, larger area for the popular eagle, which has
been with the Raptor Center since 2006 when she was brought in with a
gunshot wound and it was determined she could be released back into the

TERRACE
- Daybreak Farms has received permission from the city to double its
number of chickens and expand its operations. Daybreak is the only egg
producer and grading station in Northwest British Columbia and has been
operating in the Terrace area for nearly 70 years, originally as

- Dave Pahl has written a lengthy tome to his favorite tool. Pahl, the
founder of Haines' famous hammer museum, has published "The Improved
Hammer: A Guide to the Identification, History and Evolutions of the

District expects less state money
WRANGELL
- The school district expects to have just under $500,000 less state
funding this year from last year. Enrollment is expected to be down 50
students since 2019 as many
parents
have chosen to either homeschool or enroll their children in
correspondence schools since the start of the COVID pandemic. THE

SITKA
- Police were advised that a vehicle was stopped on the bridge at
midnight with its hazard lights on. Police investigated and were told
the occupants of the vehicle were searching for a drill bit that had

- A caller reported that a man in a wheelchair was going down the
middle of the Haines Highway. Police were unable to locate the

-RCMP Constable Mat Clarabut is the first motorcycle officer posted to
the Terrace detachment. His father was a Mountie bike officer before him
and Clarabut grew up in Terrace. His new territory is extensive, all
the way from Haida Gwaii to Kitimat and Burns Lake to Terrace to Atlin.

Three honored by city
PRINCE
RUPERT - Three Prince Rupert citizens, Rob Gruber, Teresa Mackereth and
Ella Ferland, were recently honored by the city council with the 2022
Civic Recognition Awards. The “Civic Merit Award” represents an award
bestowed on an individual who has brought distinction to the community
through their outstanding achievement, according to Mayor Lee Brain. THE

Fatal crash, fire close highway
WHITEHORSE
- The Alaska Highway was shut down again last week by a serious vehicle
crash, for the second time in the past two weeks. This time a tanker
truck exploded into flames on a bridge north of Fort St. John. The
