Pond new Prince Rupert mayor
PRINCE RUPERT - Herb Pond, who previously served as mayor from 2002 to 2008, has been elected mayor for a third term. Knut Bjorndal was reelected mayor of Port Edward in last week's municipal elections. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW
Couple paid for flooding
SMITHERS -The British Columbia government has agreed to pay a local couple $300,000 to settle a lawsuit regarding the flooding of their property. Ray Chipeniuk and Sonia Sawchuck had contended the property was flooded after a government sanctioned timber harvest cut down a third of the nearby trees. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS
New dock plan proposed
SKAGWAY - Local officials are working with cruise lines on a work around for the potential loss of one of its docks because of landslide danger. A slide shut down one of the docks late in the season and officials are attempting to still be able to provide four berths next season while changes are made to the port. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

 

New Haida books
HAIDA GWAII - The final two books in a series by Haida authors Sarah Davidson and Robert Davidson have been released. "Returning to Yakoun River" and "Dancing with Our Ancestors" are illustrated by Janine Gibbons. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
Always on duty
JUNEAU -Police Chief Ed Mercer was out on his boat last week when he noticed something unusual near Favorite Reef. When he got closer, he found a 60-foot fishing boat, the Let's Go, had run aground. Mercer rescued the crew of three. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

 

Auxiliaries train
PRINCE RUPERT --The Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary from eight different communities met in Prince Rupert for a training exercise recently.  Units from Kitkatla, Nisga’a, Quatsino, Ahousaht, Kyuquot, ‘Namgis, Bella Bella and Klemtu-Kitasoo all took part. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW 
Landslide cuts highway
HAINES - A large landslide cut off a portion of the Haines Highway last week near Mile 23. A local couple was temporarily trapped in their car before being rescued by a state road crew. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

WHITEHORSE - Local hockey star Gavin McKenna had an auspicious debut last week for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League with four assists in his first game. McKenna is one of the top Canadian junior hockey players. He is 14. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR
Boys win state title
WRANGELL - The Wrangell High Boys Cross Country team has a new title. Last week it won the Division III State Title in Anchorage. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
Sinking investigated
HAIDA GWAII - The federal Transporation Safety Board is investigating last month's sinking of a tour boat off Moresby Island. The 42-foot Island Bay had seven people on board when it went down, all were rescued. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
Ferry service proposed
PETERSBURG - The Borough Assembly is proposing that the Inter Island Ferry begin serving Wrangell and Petersburg again. The Assembly recently sent a letter to the Wrangell Borough Assembly proposing the two bodies work together on resuming the service which originally began in 2006 and was then suspended in 2008 because of low ridership and other issues. SITKA - A caller reported that his house sitter was concerned about a suspicious person outside the house. Police investigated. It was a bear. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

 

Orange heart display vandalized
TERRACE - Officials are investigating the vandalism of 300 "every child matters" orange hearts that had been made by the Suwilaawks Community School. The vandalism occurred on the recent National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on the Howe Creek Trail. THE TERRACE STANDARD

She just keeps on running!
HAINES - Jennifer Hughes likes to run. Really, really, really likes to run. Recently she competed in the 330 kilometer "Tor de Geants" challenge in the European Alps, that's just about 200 miles. Hughes, 44, has been taking part in ultra-marathons for more than a decade. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

 

Rotary raises $4,500
KITIMAT - The Rotary Club's first responders' fundraiser raised $4,500 for local charities last week. The money will be shared by the Kitimat Hospital Foundation and Kid Sport. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
