Crash knocks out internet
PRINCE RUPERT - Residents of Northwest BC (and southern Southeast
Alaska) were without internet service overnight last week after a
vehicle knocked over several transmission poles near Burns Lake.

$3M for landslide mitigation
SKAGWAY
- The borough assembly will spend more than $3 million to help mitigate
future landslides at the Railroad Dock. The idea is to make it possible
for smaller sized cruise ships to still use the dock. It had been
estimated that it would cost more than $40 million to make the dock

New mental health facility being built
TERRACE
- Work has begun on an expanded Seven Sisters mental health facility,
officials say. The new facility will have 40 rather than 20 beds and
will replace the building that is being torn down to make room for the

Survey: Visitor congestion an issue
SITKA
- The busiest visitor season in Sitka's history is drawing mixed
responses from residents, according to an end of the season survey. More
than 383,000 visitors arrived this past summer. The survey showed that
while most people appreciated the economic jolt the industry gave the
community in 2022, a sizeable percentage, nearly 40 percent, were

No cause of death yet
JUNEAU
- Police say it could be several months before it is determined how
Faith Rogers died. Rogers, 55, body was found on the Brotherhood Bridge
Trail last month. Her death is being classified as suspicious. THE

Atrill reelected mayor

-- Gladys Atrill has defeated Murray Hause to retain her city
mayorship. Frank Wray, John Buikema, Calvin Elliot Laura Leonard,
Genevieve Paterson and Sam Raven were elected to seats on the city

High bacteria counts
WRANGELL
- Residents are being advised to be careful with shellfish from the
Shoemaker Bay area.. Recently water tests show high levels of fecal

Germuth reelected mayor
KITIMAT
- Voter have returned Phil Germuth to the District of Kitimat mayor's
position. Mario Feldhoff, Terry Marleau, Edwin Empinado, Graham Pitzel,
Michelle Martins and Gerry Leibel were elected to the district council.

RUPERT -The Public Library will be hosting a tankful of coho salmon
eggs for the next several months. Library patrons will be able to watch
as the fish grow from egg to alevin to fry. The salmon will be released

Totem talk at annual meeting
JUNEAU
- Totem scholar Emily Moore will be the keynote speaker at the
Gastineau Historical Society annual meeting on Nov. 14. Moore, a
Colorado State University professor who was raised in Ketchikan will
talk about the mystery surrounding the misnaming of the “Four Story”
pole that has long stood in front of the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. THE

Fire destroys house
SMITHERS
- A house on Alfred Avenue was destroyed by a fire last week. Fire
officials said efforts to fight the fire were delayed because of downed

- Liz Landes was bicycling along the Haines High last week when she
came across a giant puffball mushroom. The edible 'shroom was 26 inches

New city mayor
TERRACE
- Sean Bujita is the new Mayor of the City of Terrace. Bujita was
unopposed in the race to replace Carol LeClerc who retired after two
terms. Chris Apps, incumbent James Cordeiro, Inder Dhillon, incumbent
Brian Downie, incumbent Dave Gordon, and Sarah Zimmerman were elected to

Water rationing sought
SITKA
- Residents are being asked to conserve water because storage tanks are
being used rather than the regular water supply after a chlorine
