Missing bracelet turns up, 30 years later
HAINES - In 1990, Haines jeweler Jenny Lyn Smith sent a silver bracelet to a jeweler in Sitka. It never arrived. Turns out it has been in the recesses of the Sitka post office ever since. Someone recently found the box and posted a picture of the bracelet on FACEBOOK. The bracelet is now back in Haines. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Hospital security to get boost
TERRACE - The Provincial Health Ministry is putting 10 new security officers in hospitals in Terrace and Prince Rupert. The ministry says that current private security services at the Mills Memorial Hospital and the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital are being augmented because of recent security incidents at both facilities. Cruise dock moves ahead
JUNEAU - Plans to create a new cruise dock in downtown Juneau are moving ahead. Norwegian Cruise Lines recently donated a two-acre parcel it had purchased for $20 million in 2019 to Huna Totem Corp. Huna Totem will develop the dock and NCL will have preferential use of the facility. NCL and Huna previously worked together on a dock at Point Icy Strait. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
DOJ visits Sitka
SITKA - Sitka got a little extra attention on election day when US Department of Justice officials checked in to see about access compliance. Apparently 60 communities nationwide, including four in Alaska, received the visits this year. The Alaskan communities were the city of Bethel, Dillingham Census Area, Kusilvak Census Area and the City and Borough of Sitka. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
New energy plant proposed
PRINCE RUPERT - The city is looking to work with Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla to develop a wind powered hydrogen energy plant in the region. The proposed plant would produce hydrogen through electrolysis using renewable wind energy. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW
Insurance mandate considered
WRANGELL - The borough is considering whether to require boat owners moored in the harbors to carry insurance. Officials say that a recent harbor fire in Ketchikan that damaged two boats is causing Wrangell to reconsider its current policy that doesn't require insurance. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
Haines had big visitor season
HAINES - The community had nearly 80,000 cruise visitors in 2022, double the normal number over the past decade. Next year, the number is expected to increase to 82,000 THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Adams state's top fire safety officer
JUNEAU -Capital City Fire/Rescue Captain John Adams has been named the top fire safety educator in the state. He is the first person from Juneau's department to be so honored. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Smelter pension boost sought
KITIMAT - Representatives of the 1,800 former employees of the Kitimat aluminum smelter are asking Rio Tinto to increase retirement benefits again because of inflation. The retirees received a 3 percent benefit increase in October. It was the first benefit increase since 2011. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
Projects on the docket
SITKA - The borough assembly is considering several major infrastructure projects that could total more than $15 million when all is said and done. On the docket on are a new seaplane base, reconstruction of the seawall on Katlian Street and the planned marine haulout and shipyard at the industrial park. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
Coho Derby completed
HAINES - An alien won the Haines Sportsman's Association annual Coho Salmon Derby which concluded last week. Paul Hearn of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory caught a 12.2-pound fish for the $1,450 first prize. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Coast Guard building helo platforms
HAIDA GWAII - The Canadian Coast Guard is building 13 new helicopter pads throughout Haida Gwaii. The pads are being built to make it easier to access and service buoys, lights, fog signals and global positioning stations in the islands. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
2nd fire hits trailer park
JUNEAU - One person suffered minor injuries when a trailer was destroyed by a fire last week. It was the second serious fire at the Sprucewood Park in a week. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Making bad choices
SITKA - Police received a call that kids were "antagonizing" a bear in the woods off Georgeson Loop and MIlls Street. Fish and Game and Wildlife Troopers were notified. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
