Iron Man drops Juneau
JUNEAU - The Alaska Iron Man, which brought more than 1,000 athletes and $2 million in tax revenue to Juneau this year, is no more. Local officials were shocked when the international organization that sponsors Ironman pulled the plug last week, reportedly because of inflation and other economic costs. The event had been scheduled to continue in 2023 and 2024.  THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Bald eagle count still low
HAINES - The local bald eagle count in 2022 is 452, the second lowest on record. The all-time low was 279 in 2020. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Cruise passenger limit promoted
SITKA - The planning commission is recommending Sitka at least consider limiting the number of cruise passengers in the future. The borough assembly will make any final decision. In 2022, Sitka had nearly 350,000 visitors and the number for 2023 is expected to top 500,000. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
Lotsa Loonies lying about
KITIMAT - The RCMP has seized a large amount of cocaine and other drugs at a home in Kitimat. Officers were investigating something else at the home when they noticed an extremely large amount of cash in plain view. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
Bike park planned
PETERSBURG - A non-motorized bike park will likely open up next summer. The borough assembly has set aside a parcel next to Sandy Beach for the park. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
One dies in boat accident
POINT BAKER - Two former Wrangell residents were involved in a boating accident last week. Kelsey Leak spent 24-hours on West Rock before being rescued but her partner, Arne Dahl, is still missing and presumed dead. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
Neighbor injured by drill
HAINES - A months-long property dispute on Mud Bay Road has led to one neighbor being jailed and the other being hospitalized. Police say that one neighbor struck the other in the head with a power drill. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS.
Bus routes cut back
JUNEAU - Capital Transit is cutting back on bus routes because of a lack of drivers. Two routes have been cancelled. Transit says it normally has more than 30 drivers but is currently down to 25 because of the difficulty in obtaining CDLs. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Museum gets gaming grant
HAIDA GWAII - The Haida Gwaii Museum Society is benefiting from gambling. The Society has received a $35,000 grant from Community Gaming Grants program which distributed $48 million in 2022. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
Local students outperform state, barely
WRANGELL - In the glass half full category, Wrangell students performed better than students statewide in recent state assessment. Overall, more than 70 percent of Alaskan students were found not proficient in a variety of subjects. Wrangell students scored about 10 percen better than the statewide averages. Property taxes to rise
TERRACE - Residents can expect an 8 percent increase in their property taxes next year. Officials say that property taxes on a $440,000 house will increase by $150 in 2023. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Day care support pondered
PETERSBURG - The borough assembly will consider a program to support local day cares. If approved, the program will
provide day care with between $2,000 and $5,000 a year depending on how many hours they operate. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Whale survives long trip
PRINCE RUPERT -- Whale researchers say that a severely injured humpback female humpback whale has survived the 3,000-mile trip to Hawaii. "Moon" has a severely deformed spine - likely the result of a collision with a large ship - that

Fishermen find underwater 'volcano'
SITKA - Fishermen scanning the bottom of Nakwasina Sound recently found something interesting. A 100-foot mud volcano spewing gas and sediment into the ocean. Officials say there is no concern because mud volcanos do not "erupt" like more traditional volcanos. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
