Two die in mall shooting
PRINCE
RUPERT - Two people are dead after an apparent murder/suicide at the
Ocean Centre Mall last week. The RCMP said that a 52-year-old woman
died at the scene and that a 44-year-old man died later at the hospital.
Police say the man shot the woman and then himself. THE PRINCE RUPERT

Fuel spill contained
SKAGWAY
- One of Petro Marine's fuel tanks failed last week causing a spill of
several hundred gallons of #1 and #2 diesel at the company facility on
the Ore Peninsula. Company representatives say the spill was kept in the

Funding sought for building
WRANGELL
- Borough officials are scrambling to find money to repair the Public
Safety Building. They say that the building will soon become unusable.
Voters turned down an $8.5 million bond issue to fix the building in

Pedestrian hit, dies
TERRACE
- The RCMP is investigating an accident in which a pedestrian was
struck by a truck and killed in downtown last week. The accident
occurred at the corner of Kalum Street and Lakelse Avenue. THE TERRACE

Community school stays open
KLUKWAN
- School enrollment has increased to 11 students at the village school,
meaning it won't be closed by the Chatham School District. Closure
became a possibility when enrollment dipped below 10 recently. THE

Mine reopens
STEWART
- The Brucejack gold mine has reopened, a month after an employee died
at the site. Details surrounding the death have not been released. It is
the third work-related fatality at the mine since it opened in 2017.

Students get black belts
CRAIG
- Three students have been awarded black belts by the Craig Seibukan
Karate Dojo this year. Josh Andrew was awarded a second-degree black
belt and Gracie Ouellette and Shelby Beck were awarded first degree

No vaping in the johns
HAINES
- The school board has approved a step to combat vaping at Haines
School. The board recently okayed $5,000 to purchase vape detectors for

Dogs get sick on whale meat
MASSETT
- Two pets dogs appear to have gotten botulism poisoning after eating
the meat of a dead whale that washed ashore. Officials are asking
residents to keep their animals away from the carcass which washed up in

Bunkhouse pondered for housing
PETERSBURG
- The community Housing Task Force is looking at short-, medium- and
long-term priorities to address the significant housing shortage in
Petersburg. One of the first tasks will be to determine if and how the

Tax free holidays held
SITKA
- The holiday shopping season got off to a good start the weekend after
Thanksgiving with shoppers getting two sales tax free days to make
their purchases. The borough assembly had approved the tax holidays in

Council looks at downtown safety
TERRACE
- The city council is considering a proposal to add four community
safety officers to patrol the downtown area. The positions would be
supported by provincial grant funds. Councilmembers say that safety
officers would be different than RCMP law enforcement officers. THE

Tongass Electric wins state award
CRAIG
- Tongass Electric, a POW based electrical contracting firm, has been
named the 2022 Alaska Employer of the Year by the Associated Builders
and Contractors of Alaska. The company has been running an electrical

Smelter supports childcare program
KITIMAT
- The Rio Tinto aluminum smelter has contributed $88,000 to the Coast
Mountain Children's Society to support an after-school childcare
program. The money will be used to purchase a 15-passenger van to
