Fentanyl kills 19
WHITEHORSE - For the second year in a row 25 Yukon residents have died from drug overdoses. The territory has the highest per capita rate of drug deaths in the county. Nineteen of the deaths have been attributed to fentanyl. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR

Man gets 70 years
JUNEAU - Robert Smith, 57, has been sentenced to 70 years in prison for the 2000 robbery-murder of Kenneth Thomas. Smith had been tried twice in the case and earlier sentences had been appealed. Thomas' family hopes this is finally the end of the legal case. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Commissioners may be elected
HAINES - Some residents are calling for members of the Planning Commission to be elected by the public. Currently, the planning commission members choose potential replacements and then forwards its recommendations to the mayor. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Potential spills worry some
MASSET - North Arm Transportation has purchased the Omega Packing Company fish plant and will eventually move its transportation and fuel storage operations into the site. Some residents have raised concerns about potential fuel spills at the site. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
Mill property future discussed
WRANGELL - The borough heard from residents recently on what it should do with the old mill property at Mile 6 on the Zimovia Highway. Most of the suggestions dealt with new industrial development or a marine haul out facility. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
Houses raided for drugs
HOUSTON - RCMP officers used "flashbangs" in drug raids in Houston and Granisle recently. Three houses were raided, no word on what as seized. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS
Community matriarch dies
SKAGWAY - Residents are remembering Bea Lingle, a community matriarch who died in November at 95. Born in Skagway, she spent her entire adult life in the community and founded the Skagway Women's Art Co-op, amongst her many pursuits. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Search begins

No ferries for a month
WRANGELL - Residents are not happy that the winter ferry schedule shows no service for nearly a month. There will be no service between January 11 and February 3. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
Clans to be on bridge panels
